I have 30 years’ experience teaching maths to students from age four to adult - in schools, tuition centres, and via one to one tuition.

I began my teaching career as an upper primary maths specialist, but for many years now I have tutored secondary from Year 7 to Year 11, to the top grades of GCSE. Here’s how it happened!
BC (Before Children), I spent ten years working for advertising agencies, latterly at JWT as a Senior Media Executive, planning and negotiating TV airtime and press space for major clients. My interest in maths teaching began when my children were small and I was studying for an honours degree in Psychology and Education (including units on the teaching of maths – my first tutees were my children!) On relearning maths I discovered that I enjoyed it in a way I never had at school, and wanted to teach maths to others so they could feel the same way about it. So after completing my degree I embarked on a PGCE Upper Primary – maths specialism.
Following my PGCE, I extended my teaching to secondary students at the Kumon Maths Centre in Henley. In my time as Principal there, the centre grew to 120 students, and was consistently in the Top 10 of 500 Centres in the UK for retention of students (it was ‘No 1’ one year, receiving an award at the National Conference) and recognised by UK and international management as a centre of excellence. I ran Kumon Henley for six years (until 2005) teaching algebra up to and including GCSE Higher level.
After leaving Kumon, I taught as full-time maths teacher (a rare breed at primary!) at Caversham Primary School, before opening another Maths tuition centre for 4-16 year-olds in Henley, where I taught Foundation and Higher tier GCSE students. I took the GCSE Higher tier exam as an exercise to test my knowledge, obtaining A* in all three modules (GCSE was modular then…), before continuing my studies to A-Level standard (see 'Qualifications' below).
After running the second tuition centre for two years, I moved to one to one tuition and also taught as a One to One/small groups tutor at Gillotts and Langtree 11-16 schools.
Since then, I have tutored many Year 7-11s in all ability sets. I teach all the most challenging topics at Higher GCSE, with my highest-achieving Year 11 Higher Tier students obtaining Grade 9 and Grade 8 (formerly A*) at GCSE (see testimonials). Foundation and Higher Tier GCSE students have also been referred to me by teachers at local schools.

Qualifications

My degree is Psychology (Hons, 2.1), including Education and Child Psychology modules.
I am a qualified teacher (PGCE). I have taught at many schools in the Caversham area – primary and secondary, teaching class-sized groups, small groups and one to one.
Initially, close to ten years ago now, I completed one A Level module (C1) in Pure Maths, followed by the OU MST121 course, obtaining the equivalent of an A grade. This covered topics from AS and A level, including sequences/recurrence relations, functions, coordinate geometry, matrices, calculus (differentiation and integration) and hypothesis testing.

I have also completed OU MST124 (topics from AS Maths, A Level Maths, A Level Further Maths, including calculus, advanced trigonometry and complex numbers). I obtained a Distinction (96% exam, 98% assignments). I followed this with home study of more advanced calculus, and mechanics. So, I know what it’s like to be a student too, which helps me empathise with my tutees!
